An unemployed night elf
Just wanted to let you all know why posting has been sporadic lately: I’m still without a job and continue to seek employment. Job seeking is a full time job. It sounds cliche but – yikes – I hadn’t realized the truth in that bumper sticker saying until I got laid off. One of the worst things about the new technology of job hunting is that most job postings require the candidate to fill out ridiculously lengthy online applications. Some of the applications I’ve filled out have required essays. It shouldn’t take me 2-3 hrs to fill out applications when I haven’t even nailed the interview. But who’s gonna read the answers anyway but some HR person whose goal is to screen you OUT rather than to call you in for an interview? It just doesn’t make sense.
And whose idea was it to make Salary Fields a required field on a job application form? I like to leave salary out of a job application because it’s a moot point to discuss it until I’m called in for an interview.
Listen up, those of you in HR: I need the work and I’ll take the job if you’ll hire me. If I’m willing to work for 40K less than what I was making, then so be it, but don’t use a Salary Field as a screen-out tool, it makes no sense. Call me in and let my horrible personality, bad breath and smelly clothes be a factor in not hiring me, not what I put into a nonsense salary field on an online job application.
I’m adding another layer of complexity to my job search because I am changing careers and have to go back to school to bolster my chances at getting hired in the field that I want. School starts this summer and I expect to graduate with a specific certification in 2010. And I want it bad.
So, to those of you who have been wondering what is up with Smooth lately, well, there ya have it.
And one last thing. I haven’t been completely honest. When I’m not looking for a job and when I’m not posting here, I’m playing World of Warcraft. I’m now a LVL 70 Night Elf. That’s me in the pic above. Don’t I look absolutely amazing?
